Black History Month celebrates the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. This year’s theme is Black Women in American Culture and History.

Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson wanted to raise awareness of African Americans’ contributions to civilization and founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which established Negro History Week in 1925. The event was first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that marked the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, the event was expanded to a full month.

One of the most heroic episodes in African-American history is that of the Tuskegee Airmen. The World War II movie “Red Tails,” released on Jan. 20, is a fictional account based on the first African-American fighter squad. Its title refers to a distinctive aircraft paint scheme. Developed by Lucasfilm, the movie stars Oscar®…

Being a great host or hostess means more than just delicious food – it’s how you serve it. Whether you serve your guests on casual dinnerware or fine china, one easy way to make them feel welcome (and make yourself look good!) is to set your table properly.

While most of us plan casual get-togethers, it’s important to know the right way to set a table. You can’t just plop down your plates and call it a day. Here’s a quick crash course.

How to set a table:

Draw an imaginary vertical line through the center of the dinner plate. To the right of this line, place the glassware, cup/saucer, knives and spoons. (A seafood fork also goes to the right.)

Place drinkware above the knife’s tip. If you’re using more than two glasses, fan them back diagonally to the right to form a

…

When we’re shopping for gifts, we tend to look for an item that we would like to receive. It’s important to keep in mind something that the gift recipient would want. We tend to be very focused on special occasions and life cycle events.

Is the gift for a new baby’s arrival? A baptism or communion? A graduation? A bridal shower, engagement party, wedding or anniversary? A hostess thank-you or housewarming? For Valentine’s Day? Mother’s Day? Father’s Day?

Better questions to ask yourself center on the recipient’s lifestyle and personal preferences (or, in the case of a baby gift, maybe the parents‘ preferences). Is the birthday girl a tomboy or girly-girl? Is the birthday boy into sports? If so, which ones? Do the bride and groom have a gift registry? If so, what’s on it? Do the new homeowners go for country, traditional or contemporary home décor?…

Whether you’re a maid of honor, bridesmaid (like Ginnifer Goodwin’s character Rachel in “Something Borrowed,” which opened in theaters May 6th), a bride to be (like her best friend, Darcy, played by Kate Hudson), or simply on the guest list, you’re not alone. According to industry insiders, May through October are the most popular months for weddings.

And whether you’re planning an engagement party, a bridal shower, or the wedding itself, you’ll be on the lookout for gifts that are unique, meaningful and lasting. While generations of brides have known Lenox for its quality tableware (our Opal Innocence is the No. 1 fine china pattern in America, by the way), Lenox also has beautiful items for the reception, attendant gifts, party favors, personalized keepsakes, original jewelry and more.

So where do you start? First things first. If you’re planning a wedding shower, your first decision may be whether…
