Call it tangerine, persimmon or just plain reddish-orange. Whatever you call it, Pantone’s Tangerine Tango is a color that’s filled with energy and warmth. And it’s the Color of the Year for 2012.

In celebration of Black History Month

Black History Month celebrates the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. This year’s theme is Black Women in American Culture and History.

Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson wanted to raise awareness of African Americans’ contributions to civilization and founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which established Negro History Week in 1925. The event was first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that marked the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, the event was expanded to a full month.

One of the most heroic episodes in African-American history is that of the Tuskegee Airmen. The World War II movie “Red Tails,” released on Jan. 20, is a fictional account based on the first African-American fighter squad. Its title refers to a distinctive aircraft paint scheme. Gift giving 101

When we’re shopping for gifts, we tend to look for an item that we would like to receive. It’s important to keep in mind something that the gift recipient would want. We tend to be very focused on special occasions and life cycle events.

Is the gift for a new baby’s arrival? A baptism or communion? A graduation? A bridal shower, engagement party, wedding or anniversary? A hostess thank-you or housewarming? For Valentine’s Day? Mother’s Day? Father’s Day?

Better questions to ask yourself center on the recipient’s lifestyle and personal preferences (or, in the case of a baby gift, maybe the parents‘ preferences). Is the birthday girl a tomboy or girly-girl? Is the birthday boy into sports? If so, which ones? Do the bride and groom have a gift registry? If so, what’s on it? Do the new homeowners go for country, traditional or contemporary home décor?…
